About and editorial standards

What this site is

employmentscreening.services is an independent reference site for employers who order background checks. It explains the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and state and city laws that add their own rules.

Some links on this site earn us a commission or referral fee. We explain this below, under “How the site is funded.”

What this site is not

  • We are not a consumer reporting agency. We do not perform background checks.
  • We do not give legal advice. We are not a law firm, and nothing on this site creates an attorney-client relationship.
  • We are not a government site.

Where our information comes from

We write from statutes, regulations, and guidance published by the agencies that enforce them. We cite each source and link to it, so you can read the text yourself. Pages that summarize state or city law show the date we last reviewed them.

How we keep it current

Laws and agency guidance change. When we learn that a source has changed, we update the pages that rely on it. That review date shows when we last checked the page against its sources. Check it before you rely on the page.

Corrections

If you find an error, email us at contact@employmentscreening.services. Tell us the page and, if you can, the source that shows the error. We check each report against the statutes, regulations, and guidance the page cites. When we confirm an error, we fix it. When a correction changes what a page says about the law, we add a correction note to the page.

How the site is funded

The site is free to use. Some outbound links are affiliate links. These links go through addresses that begin with /go/. If you follow one and then buy from, sign up with or request a quote from the company it leads to, we may earn a commission or referral fee. It costs you nothing extra. Our affiliate disclosure explains how this works.

Commissions and referral fees do not change what any page says about the law. We do not sell link placements on this site, and we do not buy links to it. We do not promote people-search products that operate outside the FCRA.

Confirm decisions with your lawyer

This site gives general information, not advice for your situation. How the law applies depends on your facts, including where the job is and where the applicant or employee lives. Before you order a background check or act on its results, confirm your process with your own employment lawyer.
